Story
Anora, a young prostitute from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries the son of an oligarch. When news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as her parents travel to New York to get the marriage annulled. Mikey Madison is an extraordinary young woman whose fairytale dream comes to life. But unlike Elizabeth Taylor in “Butterfield 8”; or Elisabeth Shue in “Leaving Las Vegas,” the female protagonist never becomes the typical whore with a heart of gold. She remains tough as nails, full of rage and ready to throw her next punch until the very end. She can stand up for herself and angrily rejects those who fail to do so. It’s one of the best performances of the year.
You may be at the end of it
Just when you think you know where it’s going, it surpasses your expectations and turns out to be a much more challenging film with a sobering reality at its core. Many have considered it to be partly a comedy. Honestly, it’s a bit over the top, despite the dark sense of humor. Fair warning, this film is quite taxing on the psyche. But it’s a memorable film that will leave you in a devastated stupor.
